Through our partnership with Haygood United Methodist Church, located just two miles away at 4713 Haygood Road, Virginia Wesleyan University offers a wealth of service opportunities for students throughout the semester. These opportunities allow students to give back and make a meaningful impact in the community. Some of the ways to get involved include:
- Backpack Program – Packing food for children facing food insecurity at Luxford Elementary.
- H.A.R.K. (Haygood Acts of Random Kindness) – Engaging in various community service projects.
- Youth Group Engagement – Participating in youth group programs and events.
- Haygood Preschool Assistant Teachers – Assisting preschool teachers and supporting young children in their learning.
- Community Garden – Planting and harvesting in the community garden.
- Appalachia Service Project – Serving communities in need in the Appalachian region.
These initiatives provide students with hands-on opportunities to serve, grow in their faith, and build relationships with the local community.
Students are also encouraged to become involved in service through the Center for Civic Engagement and Service Learning (Wesleyan Engaged).
Some opportunities include:
- Habitat for Humanity
- tutoring in local schools
- events to raise funds and donations for the South Hampton Roads Food Bank
