Celebrating the Class of 2025 with Honored Guests and Meaningful Traditions

Distinguished speakers to deliver keynotes at Spring 2025 Commencement and Baccalaureate Ceremonies

University News | April 23, 2025

Virginia Wesleyan University will gather the campus community, family, and friends to celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2025 during Baccalaureate on Friday, May 16, and Commencement on Saturday, May 17. Both events will feature inspirational keynote speakers who will also receive honorary degrees in recognition of their impactful leadership and service.

Captain Janet Days, U.S. Navy (Ret.), will deliver the Commencement address on May 17 at 10:00 a.m. in TowneBank Arena. Recently retired after 37 years of distinguished military service, Captain Days made history as the first African American to command Naval Station Norfolk—the world’s largest naval installation. She also previously commanded the USS McFaul (DDG 74), earning accolades for her leadership and commitment to excellence.

Now serving as Director of Economic Development for the City of Suffolk, Captain Days continues to be a catalyst for transformation and growth. In her address, she will reflect on the resilience of VWU’s graduating class—many of whom began their college journey amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on her personal story and the insights of influential thought leaders, she will encourage graduates to lead with integrity, pursue purpose over prestige, and embrace the importance of finding the right “fit” in career and life.

The celebration begins the evening before with VWU’s Baccalaureate Service on Friday, May 16, at 6:00 p.m. in the Susan S. Goode Fine and Performing Arts Center. The service will feature a preludial concert by Vox Vera at 5:30 p.m. and a keynote address from Bishop Courtney McBath, President of Virginia Christian College and founding pastor of Calvary Revival Church.

With more than three decades of experience as a faith leader, coach, and consultant, Bishop McBath has spent his career helping others discover their purpose and embrace servant leadership. His message to the VWU community will center on transformation, faith, and the enduring impact of service—principles he champions through his leadership organization, Courtney McBath Leadership.

As the Class of 2025 prepares to cross the stage, VWU invites family, friends, and members of the campus community to celebrate this momentous occasion. Both ceremonies will be livestreamed and archived for those unable to attend in person. For more information, including parking, tickets, and ceremony details, visit vwu.edu/commencement.
